Centrifugal castings based on stainless steel and special steel are the main products of our company. Several customers proposed forging specifications to us, and ask us to manufacture stainless steel centrifugal castings based on the forging specifications. 

However, this way is not appropriate because the essence of forging and centrifugal casting is different.  Each technique produces the same material , it would show the different results on mechanical properties and the microstructure…etc.  There are several differences between centrifugal casting and forging and we can only say that the current development of centrifugal casting is able to be similar to forging when adjusting the casting or other parameters. 

However, it doesn’t mean that centrifugal casting is worse than forging.  Our company has done a series research on precipitation hardening stainless steel 17-4PH few years ago and we found out that the strength of centrifugal casting 17-4PH is able be better than 17-4PH forging material.  We ended up the conclusion that the centrifugal casting materials are with great potential and these casting materials are far beyond the expectation. 

What are the advantages of centrifugal casting?

Comparing with forging, the advantages of centrifugal casting are listed below. 

1.     The prices of centrifugal castings are good

It is difficult to do the small quantity production by forging.  However, centrifugal casting could make it.  Melting appropriate amount molten metal and pouring it into the mold for the rotation by high speed.  Customization with small order quantity is acceptable by centrifugal casting technique.  

2.  We are able to adjust the chemical composition of materials for centrifugal casting 

Adjusting the metal proportions of centrifugal casting materials is able to improve strength, oxidation and corrosion resistance.

3.  Centrifugal casting is able to produce cast iron

Ni-resist 1 is the cast iron with high nickel content and it is one of our main materials. This material is not available in forging specifications, so the material selection of centrifugal casting is better than forging!

4.     Isotropy (horizontal/vertical) 

The metallographic band structure of the forged material was stretched vertically and parallelly, and found out that the aspect ratio is not good. 

However, centrifugal casting is superior than forging in isotropy.

5.  Centrifugal casting is able to produce heat-resistant steel

The heat-resistant steel is the casting specification. For example, HK40 is one of the materials of heat-resistant steel and it contains higher carbon. This material is not easy to be produced by forging.  However, it is good to be manufactured by centrifugal casting technique.  

There are various materials that are able to be produced by centrifugal casting, but developing each centrifugal casting material well should be based on the experience year by year, so we specialize in the production of stainless steel centrifugal casting and special alloy centrifugal casting only. 

In 2022, we still focus on producing 300 series stainless steel, stainless steel 17-4PH, Ni-resist type 1 and the key products are the rings and sleeves. 

In addition to stainless steel 304, 316 and 316l, CF3M-HM is also the material for rings and it is between 316l and 317l.  It contains low carbon and good anti-sensitization properties, thus it’s suitable for welding.
