In the past few months, there were lots of inquiries regarding custom duplex 2205 tubes and rings manufactured by centrifugal casting.  In addition to European and American customers, our local customers also had the large demands of duplex 2205 tubes and rings recently.  In order to make more friends get to know our custom duplex 2205 centrifugal castings, we would like to introduce our duplex 2205 tubes and rings produced by centrifugal casting technique again in this article. 

What is duplex stainless steel? Duplex stainless steel outperforms 300 series stainless steel

Duplex stainless steel is combined with two microstructures- austenite and ferrite.  And there is a dual-phase coexistence area in austenite and ferrite, so it is called duplex stainless steel or duplex steel.  

Duplex stainless steel has a history more than 90 years, and the development and application of duplex stainless steel is to replace some common stainless steel to get more benefits.  Because of the special structure of duplex stainless steel, the strength is higher than 300 series stainless steel.  The corrosion resistance of duplex stainless steel is also excellent and it is able to resist stress corrosion, so duplex stainless steel is the right material to be applied in the environment which could cause stress corrosion instead of 300 series stainless steel. 

3 reasons why duplex stainless steel is better than 300 series stainless steel 

1.) Duplex stainless steel has good stress corrosion resistance in the environment filled with chloride. 

2.) The strength is approximate twice better than 300 series stainless steel.  So, we could design thinner tubes to save more materials.

3.) The Nickel content is lower in duplex stainless steel.  Once the price of Nickel decreases, the price of duplex stainless steel could be lower. 

P.S. However, the technique used to produce duplex stainless steel tubes also plays the important role to decide the prices of the products. 

For example, the price of duplex centrifugal casting is higher than the one produced by sand casting.

Duplex 2205 is our main duplex stainless steel manufactured by centrifugal casting

There are two types of forged duplex 2205 stainless steel, one is S31803 and the other is S32205 listed in ASTM A240. 

S32205 has slightly higher Cr, Mo and N than S31803 to maintain excellent physical properties during the production, so S32205 is recommended as the main duplex steel material.

However, S32205 is the forging specification and it is not for centrifugal casting.  Hence, our duplex 2205 tubes and rings are based on the casting specification and the proportion of chemical composition is a little different from the forging one. 

The applications of duplex 2205 tubes and rings by centrifugal casting

Because 2205 duplex stainless steel has the good stress corrosion resistance, pitting corrosion resistance and crevice corrosion resistance, so duplex 2205 tubes/ rings produced by centrifugal casting are often used for the key components of chemical processing equipment, water treatment equipment, food processing equipment and others. 

Most customers purchased our rough-machined duplex 2205 centrifugal castings as the critical parts for water treatment equipment.  The common materials for centrifuge parts of water treatment equipment are stainless steel 316L and duplex 2205.  The duplex 2507 centrifugal castings were also used as the important material for large water treatment equipment enormously.
